Personal, Social & Health Education

PSHE Curriculum Statement

Personal Social Health and Economic Education at Greenfield Primary School enables pupils to develop positive attitudes and behaviours and is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos. British Values are promoted through the overarching aims and objectives of PSHE by supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.

Intent

At Greenfield Primary School we believe that PSHE should enable our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We aim to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We aim to support children in developing safe and healthy lifestyles, understanding what makes good relationships and having the self confidence and self-esteem to make informed choices regarding personal or social issues. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.

The curriculum will demonstrate appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding to fulfil the duties of the Relations Education (RE), Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education (HE) whereby schools must provide a ‘balanced and broadly-based curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and prepares them for the opportunities and responsibilities and experiences for later life.

Implementation

At Greenfield Primary School PSHE is taught in each class on a weekly basis.  In order to deliver the core themes, we use a school PSHE scheme. This is a whole school approach using structured, progressive plans. Each year group works on the same half termly topic at an age appropriate level following a spiraled curriculum on a two year cycle. Children learn about their place in the community and the world. They discuss and celebrate how people are different to each other. Children set goals and think about their aspirations. Being and keeping healthy, both physically and mentally, are key elements that the children learn about and discuss. Children learn about friendships and family relationships and also think about how they themselves change and develop over time.

Impact

At Greenfield Primary School we use a variety of ways to find out what the children know. Teachers frequently question children throughout lessons to gauge learning and understanding, particularly at the beginning and end of a lesson. We encourage the children to talk and to shares ideas and experiences and their comments are noted. Children also have access to the class feelings monsters where they can leave question or comments they would like discussed.  Children may record their learning and photographic evidence may be collected.  Monitoring includes half termly staff questionnaires, scrutiny of planning and interviews with pupils.  These ensure curriculum coverage and show children’s attitude to learning and the quality of learning.
