Reciprocal Reading

Today we are going to continue reading chapter 3 of our story ‘The Legend of Captain Crow’s Teeth.’

Read up to page 9 where it says “Nope. Some people need to hear things twice.”

Prediction - Why do you think Mum has said that? What do you think she means?

Think carefully and use any clues you have read in the text already. Use the sentence starters below to help you write your prediction.

I think that a Mum said that some people need to hear things twice because ____________. I think this because________________.

Now read the rest of the pages.

Writing

Today I would like you to use the words that you collected yesterday about the lighthouse to write a setting description.

PART 1
Think about these question prompts to help you structure your paragraphs:

  • What it looks like from the outside?
  • What is it surrounded by?
  • What can you see?
  • What can you hear?
  • What can you smell?
  • What does it feel like as you approach the lighthouse?

PART 2
Then begin describing the inside:

  • What is it like when you step through the door?
  • What can you see?
  • What is inside?
  • Do you climb stairs immediately or do you see rooms inside?
  • What might be inside the rooms?
  • What might it smell like?
  • What might you hear as you climb up to the top?
  • How might you feel inside the lighthouse?

Please try your best to make it interesting by using powerful adjectives and phrases to paint a picture in my head, but do remember your punctuation and best cursive handwriting as it is still important you are trying hard to present your work neatly for when we return to school.

Maths

ROYG - Today you will be learning about 24-hour time on a clock. On a 24-hour clock, times may look different after 1pm because 24-hour time does not use am and pm. Here is a video to explain how to record time in 24-hour time - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_n_KGf277I. Attached is a PowerPoint to work through with an adult so that you understand the methods for working out the answers. Once you have worked through the PowerPoint, you must have a go at answering the questions independently (ask an adult for help if you get stuck).

B2 - Today you will be learning about unit fractions. A unit fraction is a fraction where the numerator (top number) is 1 and the denominator (bottom number) is a whole number e.g. ¼, ⅕, 1/23 etc. Attached is a PowerPoint to work through with an adult so that you understand the methods for working out the answers. Once you have worked through the PowerPoint, you must have a go at answering the questions independently (ask an adult for help if you get stuck).

B1 - Today you will be learning to partition numbers. When you partition numbers to 100, you partition them into tens and ones. How many tens does the number have? How many ones does the number have? Attached is a PowerPoint to work through with an adult so that you understand the methods for working out the answers. Once you have worked through the PowerPoint, you must have a go at answering the questions independently (ask an adult for help if you get stuck).

Science

Today you will be learning about how temperature can change the speed that a plant absorbs water.

If you have the materials, there is an investigation you can carry out to test the speed that water is absorbed in a hot, room temperature and cold climate. Attached is a sheet for you to record your findings on (if you have access to a printer).

You need:

  • Food colouring
  • 3 flower with white petals
  • Bowls/containers to put the flowers in

If you don't have access to the materials, think about these questions:

  • Does it need to be hot or cold for water to evaporate from the plant’s leaves?
  • If it is cold, will the water be able to evaporate?
  • What temperature would it be best for plants to absorb water in?

Attached is a PowerPoint that will tell you all about how to carry out the investigation. You will also have the prediction activity and range of conclusions attached.
