Thursday 30th April 2020

Reciprocal Reading

Today, we are going to finish the first chapter by reading pages 5 and 6.

Once you have done this, your task is to write a summary of the whole chapter that we have read this week. Think about and include points about what we have found out about Will and his brothers/family.

Remember a summary should not be any longer than 3 sentences and should only recap on the most important parts.

Literacy

I have written a setting description to describe a beach. Now, as you all know, I am always super proud of my writing and I always think I have done a super job! So, I would like to share it with you. Please see it below.

Also, as you all know, sometimes I make mistakes and my writing is not always interesting enough. So, I thought that maybe you could have a read of what I have written and see if you can correct any mistakes and make it even more interesting. Remember, you can do this by adding:

  • Adverbs - words and phrases that tell us how, where or when something happened e.g. the boat sailed peacefully/ the boat was in the middle of the beach/ I saw the boat on a sunny day.
  • Fronted adverbials - words and phrases that tell us how, where or when something happened but unlike adverbs, they go at the start of a sentence and they are followed by a comma e.g. On a bright sunny day, there was...
  • Adjectives - describing words e.g. beautiful, peaceful, calm.
  • Noun phrases/expanded noun phrases - words and phrases that describe an object, place or person using more than one adjective e.g. The boat sailed on the clear, blue ocean.
  • Prepositional phrases - words and phrases that tell us the position of something e.g. The boat sailed on the surface of the glistening sea.

You will need to make sure that I have included: capital letters, commas in a list or after fronted adverbials, full stop at the end of my sentences and interesting adjectives/expanded noun phrases.

Maths

ROYG - Today you will be applying everything we have learnt during the fractions topic, in some problem solving questions. For this, you will need to follow this link (https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/) to a video that will allow you to work through the questions on your own, and will then check your answers and method for finding the answer. Click ‘Summer Term - Week 2’ > ‘Lesson 3’ and watch the video. You will also need to click on  ‘Get the Activity’ for your question sheet. The answers are also available on the page.

Here is some support in breaking down and explaining the question to your child:
Q1: We know that the jug is 4/7 full. This means that it is 3/7 empty. That 3/7 is equal to 72ml. Use this information to find what 1/7 of the jug can hold by dividing 72 by 3 (partition the number 72 into 60 and 12 and divide these numbers by 3). Then multiply this amount by 7 to find the full amount by using column multiplication.
Q2: We know 60 cubes are yellow and that makes ¾ of the cubes. If we divide the 60 yellow cubes by 3, that will tell us what ¼ is. If we add on this ¼ then we will know there are 80 cubes altogether, which is ⅚ of the total shapes. If you divide 80 by 5 then you get 16, which we need to add on to 80 to find the total amount of shapes (6/6 of the shapes).
Q3: Start with the second row/clue. Divide 96 by 4 as there are 4 circles, this will tell you the value of 1 circle. Use this to help you work out the rest of the clues. Remember, when you are missing a value from the question but have the answer, you must work backwards and use the inverse to find the missing values.
Q4: First, find the value of 1 pear by dividing £1.20 (120p) by 3. You know the answer to 12 divided by 3 so you should know 120 divided by 3. Then take away 12p from the value of a pear so you know the value so you know the cost of an apple. Use these clues to help you work out the other two clues.

B2 - Today you will be beginning your learning about fractions. Today’s focus is making equal parts. When working with fractions, all parts of the whole must always be equal. Attached is a PowerPoint to work through with an adult so that you understand the methods for working out the answers. Once you have worked through the PowerPoint, you must have a go at answering the questions independently (ask an adult for help if you get stuck).

B1 - Today you will be learning about capacity. Attached is a PowerPoint to work through with an adult so that you understand the methods for working out the answers. Once you have worked through the PowerPoint, you must have a go at answering the questions independently (ask an adult for help if you get stuck).

Science

Today you will be learning about the different parts of flowering plants and their jobs.

I would like you to read through the PowerPoint. You will find out all you need to know about the different parts of a flowering plant.

Then, I would like you to either print out or draw the diagram of a flower from the activity sheet. Use the diagram to label the 4 main parts of a flowering plant and explain what each part of the plant does.

When you are done, you can check your answers and add some colour to your flower if you have access to crayons.
