Imagine, Believe, Succeed

Thursday 18th June 2020

Good Morning,

There will be a Zoom call at 2pm today. This will be for King-Smith class only, as Miss Brown will be at school working and so she cannot be on Zoom with her class at the same time. However, I will be there and I am hoping to see some of your happy, smiley faces. See you at 2pm.

Stay Safe,

Miss Sharpe

Reciprocal Reading

Today you are going to continue reading chapter 6 of Nim’s Island. Once  you have finished reading the pages, I would like you to use a dictionary to clarify some words.

Clarify words:

  • sulk

  • innocent

  • raft

  • pacific island

  • somersaulted

Literacy

In the story that we have been reading, Nim is emailing someone called Alex Rover who wants to know how to build a raft that floats so that he can write a story. Nim has had ideas about using coconuts to build a raft because they float on water. She has been experimenting with this idea in the story so far.

Your task

Today, I would like you to use what has been discussed in the story for ideas and inspiration and I would like you to design your own raft. Now remember, you are on an island, you are not going to have the same materials that you might have at home, so think carefully. How would you build a raft? How would you attach the pieces? How would you make it float etc? You will need to draw your raft and label the materials/objects you have used. You may wish to write a little explanation of why you used that material on your raft (e.g. coconuts because they float on water).

Maths

Red, Orange, Yellow and Green: Today you will be continuing your learning of measure capacity. Capacity is measured in millilitres or litres. There are 1000ml in 1l. Capacity is the amount that something can hold e.g. a 1l beaker is at full capacity if it is holding 1l of liquid, or at half capacity when it has 500ml of liquid inside. Attached is a PowerPoint to work through with an adult so that you understand the methods for working out the answers. Once you have worked through the PowerPoint, you must have a go at answering the questions independently (ask an adult for help if you get stuck).

Blue 2: Today you will be learning to compare durations of time. Attached is a PowerPoint to work through with an adult so that you understand the methods for working out the answers. Once you have worked through the PowerPoint, you must have a go at answering the questions independently (ask an adult for help if you get stuck).

Blue 1: Today you will be recapping number bonds to 10. You should be able to work out the answers in your head by holding the first number of the sum in your head and counting on - you must be fluent with these. Attached is a PowerPoint to work through with an adult so that you understand the methods for working out the answers. Once you have worked through the PowerPoint, you must have a go at answering the questions independently (ask an adult for help if you get stuck).

Science

Today, you will be learning about seeds and bulbs and the differences between them.

Work your way through the PowerPoint with a grown up. In the PowerPoint, I have included videos, an investigation and some questions I would like you to answer.

Remember to read/watch all the information as this will have the answers you need.
