Reciprocal Reading

Today, we will begin reading Chapter 2 of our book. Your task today is to make a prediction. Read up to where it says ‘The night before the first disco of the summer, I couldn't sleep.’

Writing

In the first few pages of Chapter 2, Will explained that he and his brothers would spend long summer days on the beach building rafts, swimming and playing with crabs. 

Today I would like you to think of your own raft design. Have a look through the pictures below for some ideas. 

Then, I would like you to write a set of instructions for building your raft. We have written instructions earlier in the year so you can use the features we learnt about in your set of instructions.

These include:

• A title explaining what the instructions tell you to do - these tend to include ‘How to…’
• A list of materials you need (be sure to consider what you might find on/around a beach).
• Numbered instructions.
• Imperative (bossy) verbs e.g. cut, chop, tie.
• A range of sentence openers e.g. first, then, after that.

Remember instructions should be short and simple so they are easy for the reader to follow. You could also draw a diagram of your raft along with the instructions.

Maths

ROYG - Today you will be learning about months and years, as we are moving onto a new maths topic, 'Time'. Attached is a powerpoint to help you begin your learning about months and years. Once you've gone through the PowerPoint, you must have a go at answering the questions independently (ask an adult for help if you get stuck).

B2 - Today you will be learning how to find half of a shape, quantity or amount. Remember, half means split into two equal groups but each group has to have the same amount/quantity to be equal (otherwise it is not fair).  Attached is a PowerPoint to work through with an adult so that you understand the methods for working out the answers. Once you have worked through the PowerPoint, you must have a go at answering the questions independently (ask an adult for help if you get stuck).

B1 - Today you will be learning about measures. Today’s focus is capacity. Remember, capacity is how much a container can hold. RE

We have discovered that there are many different journeys that we go on each day e.g. to the shops, to school and  back home again. We also go on other journeys in life, as we grow older, meeting new people, getting jobs, making new friends etc. Today, we are going to think about changes in our own lives and any hopes and expectations that we have for the future. 

Using an example of a growing tree, your task is to record where you are now, as children on the smaller tree. Then add onto the taller/older tree, what you will achieve in the future, your hopes and dreams (these can be written or symbolised on paper tree leaves or leaves you have drawn on yourself).  There is a tree template sheet below that you may use if you have a printer, if not drawing a small tree and a taller tree will do just fine.

Each of us takes a journey throughout our lives, some take a religious journey. Discuss with an adult, why these journeys are important. Some journeys are religious journeys that are special to different religions. See below some examples:

• Muslims (to Makkah aka Mecca)
• Christians (to Jerusalem or Lourdes, perhaps)
• Hindus (to the river Ganges for example) 

We are soon going to study these journeys during this RE topic and we will think about how their faith keeps them safe and gives guidance.
