Imagine, Believe, Succeed

Monday 27th April 2020

Hello Dahl class, I hope you have had a wonderful weekend in the sunshine and managed to have some time outside. I enjoyed being outside with the dogs. Here are today's activities - enjoy!

Reciprocal Reading

Today we are going to begin reading chapter 1 of our new story ‘The Legend of Captain Crow’s Teeth.’ I would like you to read up to where it says ‘If you have brothers, then you know why’.’

Then, I would like you to write two prediction sentences to suggest why you think they have to sleep with the window open. Use the sentence starters to help you structure and write your sentences.

I think they sleep with the window open because _________________
I think this because ____________

Once you have written these two sentences, I would like you to continue and finish reading these first two pages.

Literacy

In literacy today, we are going to begin our week by thinking about what we have read in our reading book this morning and thinking about where our story might be set. This is because, on Friday, we are going to be writing a setting description for our story.

The particular part we are going to focus on to help us is where it says ‘My family spend every holiday in a caravan by the sea. All of us get stuffed into a bedroom the size of a car boot.’

This tells us a little bit about where the story might be set. Below, I have attached some pictures of caravans. Using what we have just read in the story, which caravan do you think is similar to the one that this family is staying in? Choose 1 and explain - Why/How do you know? (Use clues from the text).

Once you have decided which caravan is best suited to this story, I would like you to collect some interesting and powerful describing words for the caravan that would help to paint a picture in our heads of what it is like there, what the outside of the caravan is like, as well as the inside.

I have attached a range of pictures for you to choose from to describe the inside of your caravan (choose 1 picture of a bedroom and a picture of a living room to describe).
Use your senses to help you choose appropriate words:

  • What does it look like?
  • What might it smell like?
  • What might you hear?
  • How might you feel to be there?
  • Are there any things you might taste while you are there?

You can use a dictionary or a thesaurus to improve your vocabulary and make the words more interesting if you have one at home.

Maths

ROYG - Today you will be learning to order fractions. Follow this link (https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/) to a video that should explain things clearly for you. Click ‘Summer Term - Week 1’ > ‘Lesson 4’ and watch the video. Attached is a PowerPoint to work through with an adult so that you understand the methods for working out the answers. Once you have worked through the PowerPoint, you must have a go at answering the questions independently (ask an adult for help if you get stuck).

B2 - Today you will be learning about odd and even numbers. Remember, an even number is a number that has a multiple of 2 in the ones column (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) - all other numbers are odd. Attached is a PowerPoint to work through with an adult so that you understand the methods for working out the answers. Once you have worked through the PowerPoint, you must have a go at answering the questions independently (ask an adult for help if you get stuck).

B1 - Today you will begin your learning about measure. Today’s focus is weight and mass. Attached is a PowerPoint to work through with an adult so that you understand the methods for working out the answers. Once you have worked through the PowerPoint, you must have a go at answering the questions independently (ask an adult for help if you get stuck).

Spelling

ROYG - Today you are going to recap the learning of the spelling rule for words with the long /eI/ sound spelt with ‘ei’. Please read through the powerpoint below to help you to remember this rule. Then, with today’s words, you are going to practise the pyramid spelling method that we have practised before. I have attached a wordsearch in case you would like to do that instead (if you have a printer).

B2 - Today you are going to recap the learning of the spelling rule when adding -ed, -er and -est to a word ending in -y with a consonant before it. Please read through the powerpoint below to help you to remember this rule. Then, with today’s words, you are going to practise the pyramid spelling method that we have practised before. I have attached a wordsearch in case you would like to do that instead (if you have a printer).

B1 - Today you are going to recap the learning of the spelling rule for adding –er and –est to adjectives where no change is needed to the root word. Please read through the powerpoint below to help you to remember this rule. Then, with today’s words, you are going to practise the pyramid spelling method that we have practised before. I have attached a wordsearch in case you would like to do that instead (if you have a printer).
