Reciprocal Reading

Today, you will be reading Chapter 16 of our book Fantastic Mr Fox. Your written task today is a summary.

The text is attached below along with the Reciprocal Reading PowerPoint that you can follow as you read the pages.

Here is the order we usually follow in class for Reciprocal Reading:

  • Predict (sensible guess)
  • Read the pages
  • Clarify the meaning of words you didn’t know
  • Answer the questions
  • Summarise

Literacy

This week, we are going to be retelling the story of Fantastic Mr Fox, as we will finish reading the book this week. We are going to break down the writing into parts:

  • The opening
  • The build up
  • The main event
  • The ending

Remember, when we retell a story we are summarising the main events and not focussing on lots of the smaller details. We must also write throughout in past tense, as this is a retell, the events have already taken place.

Today we will be writing the opening of the story. This is where we meet the main characters (The Fox Family and the Farmers)  and we find out a little about them to help paint a picture in the readers’ head.

In your opening today, you must:

  • Introduce the Fox Family and explain what sort of people they are.
  • Introduce the farmers, what they keep on their farm and what sort of people they are.
  • Explain to the reader that Mr Fox and the farmers do not get on as he steals their livestock.
  • Include the farmers finding his hole and shooting his tail.

To make this exciting for the reader, you could:

  • Include exciting, descriptive vocabulary.
  • Include some speech between characters, punctuated correctly.
  • Use fronted adverbials at the start of sentences that show where, when and how. E.g.

In the deep, damp hole, …

One gloomy evening, …

Sneakily, …

  • The characters’ thoughts and feelings (make them exciting, not ‘happy’ or ‘sad’)

Enjoy writing and be sure to send me your opening to our class email, I am looking forward to reading them.

Maths

ROY - Today, you are going to be learning how to draw shapes accurately.

Here is the link to a video that will teach you everything you need to know for this lesson, just as I would teach you in class:

Sum3.7.4 - Draw accurately on Vimeo

After you have watched the video, have a go at answering the questions on the attached worksheet.

Afterwards, you can mark your answers and ask a grown up to go through any mistakes you made that you don’t know how to correct.

Green - Today, you are going to be learning to recognise and describe 2D shapes and identify and describe different types of triangles and their properties.

Here is the link to two videos that will teach you everything you need to know for this lesson, just as I would teach you in class:

Sum4.9.1 - Recognise and describe 2-D shapes on Vimeo

Sum4.9.3 - Triangles on Vimeo

After you have watched the videos, have a go at answering the questions on the attached worksheets.

Afterwards, you can mark your answers and ask a grown up to go through any mistakes you made that you don’t know how to correct.

Blue - Now you have covered all of your maths learning for this year, I have found a summer themed maths booklet that will put your maths knowledge to the test.

Everything you need to know has been covered in class this year. You have until Thursday to complete this booklet so you can work at a pace that suits you.

Attached are the answers so a grown up can check each page when you have completed it.

DT

This week we would have blocked out some time to complete our DT nightlights, however that is not possible due to us not being in school. However, I have thought of some other practical ideas that may be fun for you to complete at home.

For today’s DT task, I would like you to design and create your own sandwich, using the materials you already have at home.

The first step is to design your sandwich. It is important you consider who the sandwich is for and their preferences. Think about what ingredients you will use. Will they be hot or cold? Will they include meat or be a vegetarian sandwich? There is a design sheet attached should you wish to use it. You will need to draw a diagram of your sandwich and label the diagram showing each ingredient.

The next task is to safely make the sandwich using the utensils and ingredients from your design.

Once you have made the sandwich, allow the person that you made the sandwich for to eat it. Think about these questions: Did they like the taste of the sandwich? Did your sandwich design suit the consumer? Is there anything you could have done better?

Enjoy!
