Today, you will be writing out your setting description of the Borrower’s home. You will need to use your drawing of their home, your word bank, and you could also use some of the sentences you formed yesterday within your writing.
When writing a setting description, it is important that you describe all of the senses so that the reader really gets a feel for what that setting is like.
Below is a success criteria for what should be included in your writing, based on your group:
Green:
I can punctuate sentences correctly (CL/./, (list)/, (fronted adverbials)/!/?/”...”).
I can use synonyms for describing words to make them interesting e.g. colossal instead of big/minute instead of small.
I can use fronted adverbials at the start of sentences with a comma e.g. Under the floorboards, there are.../Quietly, .../As the sun rises, ...
I can describe the senses.
I can magpie ideas from the text.
I can use conjunctions to join 2 sentences e.g. because, however, although, despite the fact.
ROY:
I can punctuate sentences correctly (CL/./, (list)/!/?/”...”).
I can use synonyms for describing words to make them interesting e.g. colossal instead of big/minute instead of small.
I can include the where in my sentences e.g Under the floorboards there are.../There is a … on the shelf.
I can describe the senses.
I can magpie ideas from the text.
I can use conjunctions to join 2 sentences e.g. because, so, however, although, and.
When you have finished your writing, ask a grown up at home to close their eyes. Have a go at reading your setting description to a grown up. When you have finished, ask the grown up that you read to if they feel they have a good picture in their head of what the Borrowers home looks and feels like. Is there anything else you could include to help paint the picture? Could you improve any of the vocabulary you used? Did you misspell any words or miss any punctuation that you can add in?
Once you have done this and made any changes to your setting description, please remember to send me a picture to our class email address. I am really looking forward to reading them.
